In 1771, father Thomas White and William Loving,
who had recently become the son-in-law of son James Taylor White, both appear on
the first tax list for Surry County NC Both men registered their stock marks in
February of the same year in Rowan County NC.
In 1776, father Thomas White moved to the Johns River (located in what would becomes Burke
Co. NC), living there for 24 years. William Loving moved to the Yadkin River in what would become Wilkes
Co. NC. |

In 1778, there are several land transaction on the middle fork of John's River in
Burke Co. involving father Thomas White Sr. and brother Thomas White Jr. |

Capt. Thomas White Jr. served in the Revolutionary War from North Carolina. He
was commissioned or enlisted Jan 20, 1777 in Thomas Donohoe's Company of the 6th
Regiment, and mustered in 1779 in the 5th Regiment. |

Joseph married Phoebe White, the daughter of William White,
brother of Joseph's father. In the 1790 Burke Co. NC Census for
5th Company, Joseph White is listed as a head of household of 7 white members: 1 male aged 16 and up (Joseph), 2 males under age 16 (Benedict, Richard), 4 females (wife Phoebe, 3 daughters), and seven slaves. He is listed in the same company as father-in-law William and George Holloway. About 1798, Joseph White and his family moved to Claiborne Co. MS, where his estate was administered Aug 8, 1814. |

In 1792, father Thomas received one of the Spanish land grants in the Natchez
District in present-day Claiborne Co. MS and the family moved there. |

In 1798, a Thomas White and "Joseph and Reubin White",
brothers, obtained Tennessee passports to travel to the district of Natchez on
the Mississippi River. |

On Aug 17, 1798, Joseph and others witnessed an indenture from the Armstrong family
to brother Thomas White [Jr.] that was recorded in the
District of Bayou Pierre for 400 acres bordering "Filmer and Abram Green
[sons of Thomas Green Sr.]
on NE ... and on NW by the south fork of Bayou Pierre" and was witnessed by
Ebenezer Smith, Davenport Wiseman and son Joseph White

In 1804, Joseph claimed 214 acres of land in Claiborne Co. "on the Main Fork of
Bayou Pierre ... by virtue of the Third Section of the Act of Congress"
[McBee, Natchez Court Records, p. 537]. |

The 1810 Census of Claiborne Co. MS, includes the following households: Thomas White, Nelson White, Reuben White, Larkin White, and Dempsey White. The Claiborne Co. Tax Roll for the same year has: Thomas White, 1540 acres in Bayou Pierre & Port Gibson, from a "Spanish & Donation" claim, having 21 slaves. Reuben White (brother), 100 acres in W. Bayou Pierre, from a preemption claim, no slaves. Dempsey White, 640 acres in W. Bayou Pierre, from a Donation claim (military), no whites or slaves. "Devenport" Wiseman [married to daughter Sophia], 352 acres in Big Sandy Creek, from a preemption claim, and 1 slave. |

Daughter Phoebe White married Ralph Regan Jr. in 1808 and they are both buried in the
Regan Cemetery in Reganton, Claiborne Co. MS.

Brother Capt. Thomas White Jr. died Jan 3, 1813, and
is buried in the White Family Cemetery which is in Claiborne Co. MS about
4 miles south of Port Gibson. |

After Joseph died, widow Phoebe White married Joseph Powell on Dec 24, 1816 in
Claiborne Co. She may have then married Henry M. White on May 22, 1821
in Claiborne Co. MS. |

A letter of attorney to brother Benjamin White from Joel, Richard and Phoebe White,
three children of Joseph and Phoebe White,
as the heirs of William White was dated Sep 5 1818 in
Claiborne Co. MS and recorded received by the Burke Co. NC Court in Oct 1818.
Richard White is listed in 1823 as a Claiborne Co. household in a
List of Births
and Deaths in which he reports the death of two blacks. |

In 1820, "Joel White" is listed in the Caliborne Co. MS Census,
page 14,
submitted in Aug 1820. He is a single male aged 26 to 45 with 3 slaves. |

In 1823, the son-in-law Ralph Regan and daughter Sophia Wiseman of brother Thomas
Jr., and Joseph's son Richard White all reported slave births and deaths on consecutive

(levied on polls or persons, and slaves) for Joseph and his sons, Sarah White [sister-in-law],
nephews Thompson, Nelson and Larken (estate), Reuben [uncle?], and possible brothers of
wife Phoebe (sons of William White), and William White Jr. |

In the
Claiborne Co. Tax Roll for 1823 three of Joseph's sons are listed together
on page 5 as follows: Richard White, owning 320 acres in Big Black, with one poll (white person) and 5 slaves, Joel White, with one poll and no slaves, and Joseph Jr. with one pol and 2 slaves. |

Nephew Thompson married Susan Herring Jan 13, 1822 and on Apr 11, 1838 married
Susanna Graddick (1803-1847). Thompson and Susanna are buried in White Cemetery in
Claiborne Co. MS. Photo of his

Uncle William White died in Jul 1818 in Burke Co. NC
as the patriarch of the White family in NC. His obituary described him as a man
of "almost unrivalled memory and integrity". From the Burke Co., N.C. Court Minutes,
"William White, decsd. July 1818, July 1820 Will pr. by oath of Robt. M. Murrell." William Davenport was appointed Executor. On Sep 5, 1818, William's daughter Cary Milburn in Louisiana transfered her power of attorney to Joseph's brother Benjamin White, which was given to William Davenport in NC on Oct 26, 1818. The same day, Phoebe White, Joel White, Richard White, children of Joseph and Phoebe, and others sent a Letter of Attorney to Benjamin White recorded rewceived in Burke Co. NC. On Sep 7, 1818, Sarah White [sister-in-law] and a Samuel White in Mississippi transferred their power of attorney to the same Benjamin White in NC, which was recorded as received in NC Oct 26, 1818 [Gifford White, p. 74]. |

Sons Richard, Joel and Joseph White (Jr.) and the estate of "Lott Mason" are listed
consecutively on page 5 lines 33-36 in the
1823 Claiborne Co. Tax Roll. Richard White had 320 acres in the Big Black area
with one poll and 5 slaves, and the estate of "Lott Mason" had 160 acres in Big Black
with no polls and 2 slaves.
A "Lot Mason" is listed with the Whites in the 1818 letter of attorney to Benjamin
White [M.L. Vineyard, p. 363]. |
