George attended Claremont High School in Hickory, Catawba Co. NC in 1937 when he was 14 before the Holloway family moved to Washington DC. The original school building was finished in 1925. In 1986 the neighborhood around the school, including Third Avenue where the Holloway family lived, was added to the National Register of Historic Places as Claremont High School Historic District, because of its examples of Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival and Queen Anne architecture.
