Virginia in early 1700s, showing adjoining Hanover, King William and Louisa Counties. |

Hanover County Virginia was formed in 1719
(see present day map
for location). |
Henry was a legal witness for Martin Davenport, his wife's father, in Hanover Co.
VA in 1735, and purchased 175 acres of land on Little Rocky Creek in that county
during the same year. In 1751 he sold the land to Charles Kennedy, the husband
of Crotia Davenport (1709?-1789?), where daughter Crotia (1735?-1812) may have lived the rest of
her life. In 1753, Henry purchased 900 acres of land in Culpeper Co. from Thomas Kennerly
[Kennedy?] of South Carolina. |
Culpeper County Virginia was formed in 1748
(see present day map
for location), and was bounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains to the west. The
Rappahannock River forms one of its eastern boundaries. |
In mid to late 1754, son William was "heir at law of Henry Gambill" and had land
surveyed by Richard Young, chains carried by Thomas and William Baker: "William Gambill, heir at law of Henry Gambill; 8 June 1754 - 31 oct 1754; 230 ac. On S. side of Kennerly's Mt.; adj. Thomas Kennerly (now Henry Gambill's), William Manify, Thomas Baker. CC - Thomas & William Baker. Surv. Richard Young" [Northern Neck Warrants & Surveys - Culpeper Co.]. |
In 1758, daughter Elizabeth Anne married William Baker (1735-1805?), her cousin,
in Culpeper Co. VA. |
Son Henry Jr. married Charlotte Jouett (1742-1829) in VA on Jun 21, 1761. |
About 1769 in VA, son John married Catherine Walsh who was born about 1749. They
lived in Wilkes Co. for about 3 decades. |
Prior to the Revolution Henry's sons Martin, John and possibly William migrated to
the Roaring River area of Wilkes Co. NC. |
On Sep 26, 1775, witnesses made oath that William was the first born of Henry
and Mary Gambill, including Dorothy Baker who knew "very well" because she saw
them married and saw William delivered. Henry left no will and was buried in SC
according to Thomas Baker. That day, William was proved to be heir at law of
his father, dec'd, and the deed was issued to him, reserving one third during her
life to Mary Gambill. |
About 1775, daughter Sarah married John White
(1740?-1807), whose father was James Taylor White.
On May 27, 1800 their son John Jesse White was baptised at the age of 22 at the
St. Martin of Tours Church in St. Martinville LA. The church record, written in
Spanish, states his parents as Sara Gambel and Juan White and his paternal grandparents
as "James Teleur White and Elisabeth Poe, ... natives of Virginia". |
William White, the older brother of
John White married
Sophia Davenport, and younger brother
James White married Jerushka Davenport, both
daughters of Thomas Davenport. |
James Taylor White and his two sons William and Reuben, along with son-in-law
John Holloway,
and William Loving were members of a SC militia
defeated at Marrs Bluff SC, at the hands of Regulators, on July 25, 1768.
William White was wounded, losing use of his right arm so that he could not
continue his trade as a cooper (barrel maker). Excerpt from the book The South Carolina Regulators by Richard Maxell Brown gives a background and summary of the incident. |

Possibly three of Martin's sons, along with a Mary Gambill, seem to be listed in
the 1782 Wilkes Co. NC Tax List. John,
Henry, and Thomas owned 100, 400, and 320 Acres respectively. Mary Gambill, the
widow who may have died by then, had the most slaves and polls of all four Gambills
listed. |
Son Martin Gambill was Captain of his company in the Wilkes Co. NC Militia. In
1795 he is listed in Capt. Wm. Nall's District #8 of Wilkes Co. as taxable for
425 acres and 2 Polls (adult male residents). |
Son John began the process of obtaining a land grant of 100 acres on the middle
fork of the Roaring River on Dec 30 1778. He is said to be buried without a marker
at Roaring River Baptist Church Cemetery in Traphill, Wilkes Co. NC. There are
2 "John Gambells", one a "Jr." his son (1771-1859), in the 1810 Wilkes Co. NC
Census. The elder John was over 45 years of age living with a female also over 45. |

Gulf of Mexico. It eventually became St. Martin Parish in 1807.
(see present day map
for location). John White died in the the part that became Vermilion Parish
(see Map
