Captain John Roundy Jr. served in the Revolution as private, Capt. Elihu
Humphrey's Company of Col. Jed Humphrey's Regiment, Connecticut Volunteers, from
Jul 6, 1775 to Dec 10, 1775, discharged on Dec 10, 1775 when the regiment was
discontinued. He also served as Sgt. in Capt. Jonas Holton's Co. of Col. Ebenezer

John and his father and brothers were some of the first settlers of Rockingham VT.
Settlement had been essayed in 1753 by three men from Northfield MA, including
Simeon Knight, who married Sarah Harwood, who became John's Stepmother.
Fear of Indians delayed settlement until 1760/61. The first census of Rockingham
was in 1771 and it counted 225 townspeople, including 50 heads of families and 66
white adult males. Eight years later, John bought land there. | |||

After his service, John Jr. came with his father and brothers from Simsbury CT to
Rockingham VT. His first home was in the northern part of Rockingham near the
Williams River. The original deed, dated May 28, 1779, delivered the land to
"John Roundye Jun'r Simsbury in the county of Hartford". He was selectman
with his father in 1787 and 1788. |
