John and his sons were some of the first settlers of Rockingham VT. Settlement
had been essayed in 1753 by three men from Northfield MA, including Simeon Knight,
who married Sarah Harwood. Fear of Indians delayed settlement until 1760/61. The
first census of Rockingham was in 1771 and it counted 225 townspeople, including
50 heads of families and 66 adult white Males. Eight years later, son John bought
land there. |

On March 3, 1778, John and his family took an oath agreeable to the Constitution
of Vermont, adopted in July 1777. This constitution was the first to provide
manhood suffrage. |

John's son Almond served six days in 1780 in New York as a private in Capt. Jesse
Safford's Vermont company of Rangers in the Revolutionary War. Son Elmeriah also
served in the same company. |

|
Between the years 1780 and 1790, John was moderator for four yearly town meetings,
selectman two years, and representative of Rockingham to the Vermont legislature
five consecutive years. |

In June 1789, John was among the main body of 16 men who formed the First Baptist
Church of Rockingham. |

John's wife, Sarah Harwood Knight, is buried in the cemetery of the Rockingham
Meeting House, next to her stepson, Capt. John Roundy Jr. Her tombstone reads:
"In Memory of the Widow Sarah Roundy formerly the wife of Simeon Knight, who died
on the 12th day of June, 1813 in the 84th year of her age."
