John and his sons were some of the first settlers of Rockingham VT. Settlement had been essayed in 1753 by three men from Northfield MA, including Simeon Knight, who married Sarah Harwood. Fear of Indians delayed settlement until 1760/61. The first census of Rockingham was in 1771 and it counted 225 townspeople, including 50 heads of families and 66 adult white Males. Eight years later, son John bought land there.
On March 3, 1778, John and his family took an oath agreeable to the Constitution of Vermont, adopted in July 1777. This constitution was the first to provide manhood suffrage.
John's son Almond served six days in 1780 in New York as a private in Capt. Jesse Safford's Vermont company of Rangers in the Revolutionary War. Son Elmeriah also served in the same company.
Between the years 1780 and 1790, John was moderator for four yearly town meetings, selectman two years, and representative of Rockingham to the Vermont legislature five consecutive years.
In June 1789, John was among the main body of 16 men who formed the First Baptist Church of Rockingham.

John's wife, Sarah Harwood Knight, is buried in the cemetery of the Rockingham Meeting House, next to her stepson, Capt. John Roundy Jr. Her tombstone reads: "In Memory of the Widow Sarah Roundy formerly the wife of Simeon Knight, who died on the 12th day of June, 1813 in the 84th year of her age." Photo of Tombstones.
