Surry County Virginia was chartered in 1652, formed from James City County, south of the James River (see present day map for location).
Samuel, Jr. was about 15 years old when his father died in 1672.
With brother Robert, stepfather Thomas Pittman, Sr., and future father-in-law Edward Pettway , Samuel was among the 40 "less prominent Baconians" (supporters of Bacon's Rebellion) who took the King's pardon, Feb 6, 1676/7.
