Surry County Virginia was chartered in 1652, formed from James City County, south of the James River (see present day map for location).
Samuel Judkin's will, dated Feb 13 1671, was probated May 7, 1672. Samuel's death left his two year-old son Charles without a father. Lydia remarried before she died in 1678. Her death left Charles an orphan. Her second husband was Capt. Thomas Pittman, Sr. On Mar 14, 1678, Capt. Pittman was given custody of the young boy.
Sons Samuel and Robert and their stepfather, Thomas Pittman, Sr., were among the 40 "less prominent Baconians" (supporters of Bacon's Rebellion) who took the King's pardon, Feb 6, 1676/7.
