The river and county of York are believed to have been named for York, a city in Northern England. Map of Virginia counties shows York County in red.
John's father left York County VA as a young man and settled in Caroline County VA.
Caroline County Virginia was formed in 1728 (see present day map for location). York Co. was originally Charles River Shire and County (Map shows York Co. in red.
There are court records of a suit of John Holloway and his wife Rachel Holloway vs Thomas Morris; suit dismissed upon defendant's agreeing to pay costs, dated Jun 10, 1737 [Caroline Co. VA Order Book 1732-1740, p. 430.
John's brother William may be the William Holloway "of Carolina County" who, with his wife Mary (Smith, daughter of Peter Smith), deeded property in Spotsylvania Co. VA on Aug 5, 1755. According to father John's will, William and son Samuel were both to inherit "the land where I live."
Son Nathaniel is possibly the soldier in a regiment to defend the state in 1762. He may have married Mary Eubank, born 1764, Mar 7, 1782.
Son John (II) married Barbara Collawn (1764-1844).
John's Will was written Apr 21, 1769, stated that he being "of the county of Essex and Parish of St. Ann's being sick & weak" was probated in Aug 1770. His children were listed as George, John (II), Elizabeth, and Suckey [Caroline Co. Will Book 2]. In 1771, Elizabeth Holloway was listed as executrix of the deceased John Holloway (Sr.) [Campbell, p. 483].
In the Virginia Gazette" of Apr 18, 1777, “George Holloway, a young man ... deserted from Capt. Richard Steven’s Co of Caroline Co.; [Headley, Genealogical Abstracts from 18th Century Newspapers, p. 94]. This would be before the company fought in the battles of Brandywine (Sep 1777) and Germantown (Oct 1777).
Capt Richard Stevens entered service in 1777 as "Captain of Virginia company" in the 10th VA Regiment under Col. Edward Stevens who was in command from Nov 12, 1776 to Jan 31, 1778 [ 10th Virginia Regiment, familysearch.org website]. Richard died Feb 3, 1808.
Col. Edward Stevens’ regiment "had their first engagement at the Battle of Brandywine where the regiment did not enter the battle until the American forces had begun to retreat. Stevens troops covered the retreat and prevented the British from pursuing. Stevens received the public praise of Washington after both Brandywine and the subsequent Battle of Germantown" [revwartalk.com, website].
Son George fought and died during the American Revolution, "leaving no issue" On May 4, 1816 a suit over land that John Sr. left to son George, appeared as "Dickinson, John et al vs John Holloway". Ten years later another suit in Fredericksburg court records was brought between "John Holloway Jr. and Thomas Royston ... contesting the land". This land was later claimed by the family of George's sister, Elizabeth Holloway Dickinson [Royston, citing Chancery records, 1816 & 1826].
Daughter Elizabeth married Benjamin Dickinson in 1788.
Daughter Susannah (Suckey) married Thomas Royston Nov 27, 1788 in Caroline Co. VA. A Thomas Royston owned a grist mill on a branch of Mill Creek in Peumandsend Parish in the same county [Campbell, p. 404].
