Portland is still a very small town though it was incorporated in 1893. (see Map of Ashley Co. AR shows location of Portland in the eastern part of the ciunty.
Ashley Co. AR was founded in 1848 (see present day map for location), and borders Louisiana.
Father James was a large plantation owner in Hamburg, Ashley Co. AR.
After wife Lizzie died, John married Sally Edna Austin (1869-1919) in 1889. She was the older sister of Louella "Ella" W. Austin, who in 1907 became the second wife of John's stepbrother Willie Lee Holloway (1860-1933). Both were daughters of Allen Wesley Austin (1840-1917).
Willie's eldest daughter Clyde (1885-1972) also married another child of Allen Wesley Austin, Benjamin Hill Austin (1881-1917?), in 1909. About 1922, she married Charles Bainbridge (c.1870-1957).
John is buried with his wife Sallie in Portland Cemetery along with other family members who died young, son Hunter who lived to be 102, and youngest daughter, Mary Holloway Mullis.
