James was the second of three sons born to Preserved "The Settler" Ford (1685-1739) who lived and died in the Georgetown District of Craven Co. SC.
James was one of the Captains who fought under Col. Powell in the Cherokee Wars of 1759-60 in SC. Brother Joseph may be the Ensign Joseph Ford listed as one of the troops [Andrea, "SC Colonial Soldiers & Patriots..."].
In 1762, James married a woman named Ann Townsend in NC.
In 1774 son Preserved married Miriam Gaddy in Marion Co. and then Celia Barefield. In 1830, Zarv, as everyone called him, was about 75-80 years old and lived "on the west side of Gaddy's Mills, then called Ford's Mills" [Sellers, a History of Old Marion County, South Carolina].
James registered for military service in 1776 [Gregg, p. 245].
A "Ford, Jno, Sergt." enlisted Sep 1, 1778 for 9 months service, was "Ensn." Nov 3, 1778 in Jarvis' company, and "Lieut." in 1780. [Thomas, "Roster of North Carolina Troops...", website, vol 16, p. 1059].
Ensign John Ford enlisted Nov 3, 1778 and initially served under Lt. Stephen Jarvis. Jarvis was a British commander when he led a charge at Biggin Creek Bridge in SC on Jul 16, 1781. John Ford was "Ensign 3rd North Carolina, 30th November, 1778; taken prisoner at Charleston, 12th May, 1780; Lieutenant, 23d January, 1781, and served to close of war" [Heitman, Historical Register of Officers of the Continental Army ..., page 232].
The minor battle at Biggin Creek Bridge on Jul 16, 1781 was located in the original Charles Town District (see Map for location of battle [carolana.com/sc/Revolution, website].
A John Ford [son?], on Oct 20, 1778, entered a land claim #277 in Rowan Co. NC, that was granted in Oct 10, 1783 and was not a military grant based on service in the Continental Army [NC Land Grants, #277, file no. 894].
In 1790, son John married Catherine Ann Ard (1773-1854) in Marion District SC. About 1798 the family moved to the Natchez District in the Miss. Territory, and lived there until about 1805. They built the Ford Home on the Pearl River about 1809 [Webb].
About 1804, daughter Samantha married Levi Jefferson Fatheree (1781-1843). Their household of 3 adults and 9 children is in the 1820 Marion Co. Census. 2 adults were engaged in agriculture [msmarion.com, website].
Son Stephen married Elizabeth Barfield Rawls (1767-1845). Stephen's household of 2 adults and 8 children is in the 1820 Marion Co. Census [msmarion.com, census, website]. They had a son John born Jan 27, 1812 according to the Ford Family Bible [MSGenWeb, Hinds Co., website].
Son Joseph married Sarah Rebecca Rawls (1782-1859). There is no Joseph Ford household in the 1820 Marion Co. Census but his family could have been living in the household of [Rev] "John Ford Sr." that had 3 male adults and 2 female adults [msmarion.com, census, website].
The Adams Co. MS will of brother Joseph Ford, dated Nov 6, 1804, probate date unknown, names wife Rebecca, children John (executor), Thomas, Joseph (Jr.), Robert, George, Esther Strawder, & Elizabeth, and grandchildren "Elizabeth, & George Holliway". Joseph's son Robert Ford was a witness along with John Spires and Jacob Guice.
In 1805, a "John Ford" [?son] was listed in the Burke Co. list of taxables [page 237], as owning 270 acres and taxable for 1 poll [persons living on the land over a certain age]. He was listed in Captain Howel's Company near a John White, (400 acres and 1 poll), posibly a grandson of William White [NCGSJ, in Alexander, Here Will I Dwell..., p. 237].
On page 1, line 14 of the 1810 Amite Co. MS Census, the Joseph Ford [Jr.] household had:
1 white male over 21 [?son Joseph],
2 white males under 21,
1 white female over 21 [wife Kate?],
1 white female under 21,
for a total of 5 white persons,
and 10 slaves
On page 9, line 8, a Preserved Ford household had:
1 white male over 21 [son Preserved],
0 white males under 21,
1 white female over 21 [wife ?],
1 white female under 21,
for a total of 3 white persons,
and 1 slave.
On page 15, line 14, a David Ford household had: 1 white male over 21 [son David],
and no females,
and 6 slaves
[USGenWeb].
On Oct 3, 1820 Louisa Ford, "widow and relic of Solomon Ford, late of Hancock Co. [southernmost county in MS founded 1812]" deeded $4500, "all claims upon my late husbands property" to Joseph Ford, Solomon's "brother" [msmarion.com, deeds, website].
Sons Solomon and Joseph Ford are both buried in the Joseph Ford Cemetery in Marion Co. MS. A Photo of Joseph's grave marker has his dates as 1773-1823.
On Dec 5, 1836 Ebenezer Ford, "as adminstrator of the estate of Joseph Ford of Marion County, deceased, May 4, 1835" sold at public auction for $2,700 to Solomon R. Ford" land containing 370 acres [msmarion.com, deeds, website]. This would be Joseph's son "Judge" Ebenezer Ford (1801-1858) who married Juliet Anne Swift (1810-1883), and Solomon Rawls Ford (1816-1852) who was another son of Joseph Ford (1773-1823). There are other deed records in the county involving Ebenezer Ford of Tammany Parish LA, Joseph Ford and Irvin family members.
