Isle of Wight County was originally known by an Indian name and became known as Isle of Wight in 1637 (see present day map for location). Surry County, which now borders to the northwest ( Map), was created from James City County in 1652 (see map showing Virginia about 1676).
By 1738, son Benjamin had moved to an area that became Edgecomb Co. NC. Edgecombe was formed in 1741 from Bertie County (See map of NC counties in 1740), then Halifax County was formed from part of Edgecombe. (See map showing Edgecombe and Halifax counties in 1760).
Daughter Anne married Benjamin Bell, who became the guardian of her orphaned sister Mary on Apr 21, 1736.
