Joseph's father William died in 1652. Joseph was only about 16 years old. His older brother John was only 19.
After Joseph's mother remarried in 1663, she moved from Stratford with her younger children (Hannah, Sarah, Obadiah, and Phoebe) to Killingworth CT, where her new husband, William Hayden, lived. Joseph, who was then already married with three children, followed them to Killingworth.
Killingworth is in Middelsex County CT, on the south shore of Connecticut. Joseph was one of its original landowners of 1663, when it was known as Hammonassett Plantation. It was sometimes called Kenilworth. Originally, Yale University was located in Killingworth.
Daughter Hannah married Peter Farnum on Dec 8, 1686, only the fourth marriage recorded in the early history of Killingworth.
