James served in the Revolutionary War as Private from Lincoln Co. NC; 4 months against British-allied Cherokee Indians; 4 months at the siege of Charleston, 3 months at Camden, and 3 months on an expedition to Wilmington.
James lived first on land inherited from his father, then near Mount Pleasant Church in Chesterfield NC. See History of Chesterfield.
In 1830, daughter Nancy married George W. Bristol, 1810-1892, eldest son of Benedict Bristol and Jennie McCall.
Daughter Catherine (Katy) married James L. McCall, son of Robert McCall in Jan 1830.
Son Milton W. married as first wife, Abigail Bristol, daughter of Benedict Bristol and Jennie McCall.
The 1790 US Census for the Ninth Company, Morgan District, Lincoln Co. NC lists the household of "Jas Kinkaid". as having:
1 free white male of 16 years and upward - James;
3 white females - possibly Jane and two of younger sisters of James;
and no slaves;
in the same company (ninth) as the households of his father and of several brothers.
James' land had excellent views of the mountains, including Table Rock (photographed from the Blue Ridge Parkway).
In the 1840 Burke Co. NC Census the household of son-in-law George Bristol is listed on the third line of extracted page 22, with 10 members:
1 male under age 5,
1 male aged 5-10,
1 male aged 30-40 (George),
3 females under age 5,
1 female aged 5-10,
and 1 female aged 30-40 (wife Nancy Kincaid),
and 2 male slaves.
