Prince George Co. Virginia was formed in 1702 and its boundaries defined by 1703. (see present day map for location). Originally, its southern boundary was the North Carolina line.
John's wife Frances Chambliss was the daughter of Henry and Frances Chambliss.
In 1769, a John and a William "Hollaway" are listed as Taxpayers in Craven Co. NC website. John had a brother named William.
On Sep 4, 1775, son Mark married Mary Westfield (1755-1809) who later married Maj. Robert Lide after Mark died. Jane, daughter of Mark and Mary, married step-brother James Lide on Aug 22, 1793.
Son Mark "Hollaway" was listed as a Cheraw District juror in the SC Jury Lists 1778-1779, along with a John "Hollaway" (son), and a Thomas, Robert, & William Lide, and a John Westfield, and in the Below Ninety-Six District, a "John Halloway".
Son "Mark Holloway" was listed as having accounts from 1788-90 in an old, partially intact ledger from the Georgetown District of SC.
Son Mark's son Jesse (1785?-1859) and wife Rachel, nee McIver (1787-1822) are both buried in Welsh Neck Baptist Church Cemetery in Society Hill, Darlington Co. SC. Tombstone of grandson Jesse Holloway, and Tombstone of his wife Rachel. See photo of Historical Marker.
On Jul 12, 1780, a John Holloway and a John Holloway Jr. obtained two of the first land grants in what was in 1777 Washington Co. NC, and became Sullivan Co. in 1779, and is now in the state of Tennessee across the border from NC. The exact location of the land was vague in one of the grants, described as follows:
"John Holloway, Jr.-#627, Book 81, pg. 630-200 acres-Sullivan County-land lying on two entries made by Nathan Page" and "bounded" by a Thomas White, possibly Thomas White Sr., the uncle of William White [NC Land Grants, File nos. 627, 679].
Sullivan County was created in 1779 from the far northeast corner of Washington Co. NC (see present day map for location).
On Feb 29, 1788 daughter Frances married William Young (1762-1831), son of Thomas Young of Bute Co. NC, and had 14 children.
In the 1790 Ninety-Six District, Edgefield Co. SC Census [left column] there is a household transcribed as "Hollsway, Jams " with:
1 white male aged 16 or older (James b. 1772),
no white males under 16,
3 white females [wife, 2 daughters),
and no slaves.
In this location, there are 6 other households with similar spellings of the last name, including a "John Holloway" [middle column] with 2 males over 16 (John,?) and 1 female (daughter ?Mary, wife Frances died previous year) [Gregg, p. 64].
