Joseph married Mary when he was 16 and she was 14. The marriage ended in divorce after they had three daughters. Both remarried.
Joseph entered the armed service on Jul 10, 1942. He was a Navy CB (Construction Battalion) in World War II, serving in the Marshall Islands, Marianas, and finally in the Saipan Landings in the Pacific, where, on Jun 26, 1944, he suffered a shrapnel wound to the head during the battle. He was awarded a Purple Heart and three battle stars.

Daughter Ruth married Billy Glasbrook (1944-2022) on Mar 20, 1966.
When Joseph died in 1997, he was the last grandson of John Burton Holloway (Sr.), killed at the Battle of Gettysburg, who was born in 1835, 162 years earlier.
