In 1634, what is now York County was formed as Charles River Shire for King Charles I, one of the eight original shires of Virginia. Charles River Shire took its name from the younger son of King James I. During the English Civil War, Charles River County and the Charles River (also named for the king) were changed to York County and York River, respectively. The river, county, and town of Yorktown are believed to have been named for York, a city in Northern England. Map of Virginia counties shows York County in red.
"Poquoson" is the Algonquin Indian term for "great marsh". Poquoson and Williamsburg were independent cities adjoining York County.
Son William may have married someone named Ann, and may be the father of John Holloway (1701-1764).
In 1710, a John Holloway "leased [from the Crown] for a term of 500 years a tract of 2,660 acres in the section which became Drysdale Parish across the Rappahannock-Mattapony watershed from the headwaters of Peumandsend [Creek]". This was likely George's son John born 1670 and died after 1720, possibly in nearby St. Mary's Parish. Then Holloway sold the lease to Robert "King" Carter "of Lancaster for seven pounds sterling and six Negroes". Carter never lived on the property but "he and his heirs maintained a plantation there for many years with an overseer in charge" [Campbell, p. 318].
In 1720, William and John Holloway (possibly sons) owned adjoining lands in St. Mary's Parish VA [Campbell, pp. 305, 318].
St. Mary's Parish was founded about 1677. It is among several parishes to form Caroline Co. VA in 1728. (see present day map for location). The history of St. Mary's and St. George's parishes have Essex Co. present day location in common and a neighbor of Caroline Co., while Gloucester Co. to the west was formed from Essex Co. in 1721. Sons William and John and their mother all seem to have Essex Co. locations in common.
St Mary's Parish bordered the Rappahannock River to its north and Drysdale Parish to its south. Map of Caroline Co. drawn in 1751 shows what were previously St. Mary, Drysdale and St. Margaret parishes [Louisa Co. VA Genealogy, website]. The only church in St. Mary by 1760 was the Mount Church on the Rappahannock north of Port Royal [Campbell, p. 430].
