HEATING: Active - Vigilant Wood Stove by Vermont Castings, Inc. and
Baseboard Electric Units as Backup.
Passive - Solar Radiation through South-facing Window Wall and
extensive window area on the east and west walls.
ENERGY CONSERVATION FEATURES:
1. Double-glazed windows (Standard on most modern Vermont homes)
2. Heat Stopper insulated shades on "Big Room" windows. (R15 rating)
3. Six-inch concrete slab under "Big Room" floor above a gravel
base for thermal mass heat storage. (4-inch thickness is normal)
4. House partially buried to reduce wind exposure and infiltration.
5. Ten-inch thick fiber glass insulation with R30 rating in walls.
NOTE: Extra cost resulting from energy-conserving, solar design is not
significant except for the first three items above; namely, the greater glass area in the southern
exposure added $1,000 to the construction cost; the insulated shades, $1,400, and the increased thickness
of the concrete slab, $200.
SAFETY FEATURES: For protection at this exposed site)
Two lightening rod points on the tower and grounding of all major
metal parts such as the spiral stairs and the pipe supporting stucture.
