In Surry Co. VA, James lived on land bordering land of Gilbert Gray,
possibly the 156 acres at mouth of Cattail Branch that his elder son James and his
widow Elizabeth and Richard Andrews (her 2nd husband) deeded in 1740 to
Robert Gray. This transaction was witnessed by Gilbert Gray and younger son
Benjamin. |

In his short will, James left everything to his widow, Elizabeth, and after her death
to two sons. All of his children were young when James died. Elizabeth
married Richard Andrews who died in 1750. The following year she moved from Surry Co.
VA and settled in Edgecombe Co. NC with her sons, James & Benjamin. Her will
(see Abstract), dated
Apr 4, 1767, was probated in Edgecombe Co. NC on the second Tuesday of Jan 1768.
Three daughters, but only one son, Benjamin, is mentioned in the will, named
Executor and receiving the remainder of her estate. |

Daughter Elizabeth married John Egerton.
They moved to NC by 1732 and her brothers James and Benjamin followed in 1740,
when there is a deed dated Sep 4, 1740, from "John Edgerton to James Nicholson,
of Surry County in Virginia", for 370 acres on the south side of Roanoke River,
on Stone House Creek. Soon after there is a sale of 200 acres on the north side
of Fishing Creek from Thomas Person to Benjamin Nicholson.
All of this land was in Bertie Co. NC in 1740. |

A 1762 List of Taxables
in the Little Fishing Creek District of Granville Co. NC shows son James as the
head of a household of Henery and John Allin. A Samuell Nicholson is also listed
in a single taxpayer household. |

On Feb 25, 1765, son Samuell sold "a negro girl, horse, household goods, and chattels"
to brothers John and Benjamin Egerton. This
John Egerton was the husband of Samuell's sister Elizabeth. |

| The son of daughter Elizabeth, James Egerton and his wife Martha named two of their sons James Nicholson Egerton and Gilbert Gray Egerton (1776-1847?), strongly indicating a descent from James Nicholson who owned land next to Gilbert Gray in Surry Co. VA. A son of Gilbert Gray Egerton, James Albert Egerton, wrote History of the Egerton Family. | |||
