John was a mariner by trade and belonged to a mariner's church in Stepney. He was
not married there however and seems to have had trouble with both his church in
England and later with the puritans in America, eventually being jailed late in his
life. He married Elizabeth in the All Hallows Church by the Tower of London "under
a special license" in 1624. The marriage record lists him as "John Varnam,
sailor of Stepney, Middlesex". |

|
John emigrated with wife Elizabeth and Henry, who may not have been his son but
a brother or half-brother, in the "second emigration from London" about 1635.
An emigration record lists Henry as the "first son of John and Elizabeth". |

|
Son Jonathan, known as Captain was admitted to the same Dorcester artillary company
as Henry, who was admitted in 1644. Jonathan was described as the nephew of a
fellow member in the records. |

Killingworth is now known as Clinton CT. Clinton is on the south shore of
Connecticut. Henry was one of its original landowners of 1663, and his was one
of the ten families who settled when it was known as Hammonassett Plantation.
It was sometimes called Kenilworth.
The land in this area is hilly and rolling, with forests. |
