Jonathan settled in Norfolk VA to work in the wholesale mercantile business.
There he kept "bachelor's hall" with good friend Gen. Winfield Scott (1786-1866)
the War of 1812 general and later the Whig Party candidate. |

Jonathan and Jane later lived in North Carolina, mostly in Franklin Co. In 1840,
they moved further west to Brownsville TN outside of Memphis, which was just a
village then. |

Wife Jane was educated in Philadelphia PA. |
