Jonathan settled in Norfolk VA to work in the wholesale mercantile business. There he kept "bachelor's hall" with good friend Gen. Winfield Scott (1786-1866) the War of 1812 general and later the Whig Party candidate.
Jonathan and Jane later lived in North Carolina, mostly in Franklin Co. In 1840, they moved further west to Brownsville TN outside of Memphis, which was just a village then.
Wife Jane was educated in Philadelphia PA.
