Hugh Smithwick emigrated to America in the spring of 1642 in a party of 15 brought by
William Eyers/Ayers, who received 750 acres on May 23,1642 in exchange for their
transportation 750 acres. |

He moved from Norfolk Co. VA to Albemarle Co. NC in the 1660's. His land was in
Shaftesbury Precinct, later Chowan Precinct and was bounded on the south by Albemarle Sound,
on the west by Edenton Bay, and on the north by Mattacomack Creek (now
Queen Anne's Creek). |

Virginia planters in pursuit of rich land on which to grow tobacco began moving
into the northeastern area of what is now North Carolina in the 1650's.
By 1663, these early settlers had attracted attention in England.
A group of English courtiers thought that they saw in the region an opportunity
to colonize the country and thereby acquire power and wealth. They sought a
grant from King Charles II of England who complied by issuing a charter to the
eight Lords Proprietors in 1663 by which he created the Carolinas. Hugh
Smithwick was thus one of the early permanent white settlers in the Carolinas. |
