John emigrated to America with his younger brother, Nathaniel (1601?-1654?),
soon after his first wife died and he married his second wife, Elizabeth.
At the time of his marriage, John was called "of La[w]ford in the county of Essex
Widower". After several years in Ipswich, they settled in Newbury. |

John Merrill was "admitted as a freeman at Newbury, Essex Co. MA in 1638, making
him one of the earliest settlers. His brother Nathaniel Merrill removed to Newbury
in 1635, at the first settlement of the town, and settled on land at the junction
of the Parker and Plum rivers. John's future son-in-law,
Stephen Swett, was another early settler.
