John emigrated to America with his younger brother, Nathaniel (1601?-1654?), soon after his first wife died and he married his second wife, Elizabeth. At the time of his marriage, John was called "of La[w]ford in the county of Essex Widower". After several years in Ipswich, they settled in Newbury.
John Merrill was "admitted as a freeman at Newbury, Essex Co. MA in 1638, making him one of the earliest settlers. His brother Nathaniel Merrill removed to Newbury in 1635, at the first settlement of the town, and settled on land at the junction of the Parker and Plum rivers. John's future son-in-law, Stephen Swett, was another early settler. Marker erected by the descendants of the first settlers.
