Isle of Wight County was originally known by an Indian name and became known as
Isle of Wight in 1637 ( Map).
Surry County, which borders to the northwest
( Map), was created from James
City County in 1652. |

|
Granville County was created from Edgecombe in 1754
( Map),
then it became Bute in 1764 ( Map),
and finally Warren was created in 1779 ( Map).
Bute was the Prime Minister of King George III and the residents did not like that
so they split up Bute County in 1779 into Franklin and Warren Counties. |
