The river and county of York are believed to have been named for York,
a city in Northern England.

Prince George County Virginia was established in 1702 and its boundaries defined by 1703.
(see present day map
for location). Originally, its southern boundary was the North Carolina line. In
1720 Brunswick Co., bordering North Carolina (see
present day map
for location), was formed from Prince George, Surry and Isle of Wight Counties.

Father George was a large tobacco farmer in York Co. VA. He is referenced in a letter
dated May 10, 1767 from a tobacco merchant in London. |

After the French and Indian War (1754-1763), dozens of troops from Caroline Co.
VA appeared in the Order Books claiming "land bounties for services rendered"
including a son of John Carter, and a
Nathaniel Holloway, probably this Lt. William Nathaniel Holloway who would have
been in their 20s during most of the war [Campbell, pp. 283, 372]. |

By 1760, William married Martha Ballard, daughter of
John Ballard (1715-1787) of Mecklenburg Co. VA, who witnessed the will of father
George Holloway on Jul 6, 1759. John Ballard was the son of Thomas Ballard Jr.
(1695?-1725?) and grandson of Col. Thomas Ballard (1655?-1710?), born in York Co.
VA. Brother Bennett married Martha's sister Rebecca Ballard. |

Son Daniel inherited the plantation in Brunswick Co. VA according to his father's
will proved in 1784. Son Obed had died by then leaving orphans in Edgefield
Dist. SC with property there. |

Brother George married Sarah Patterson (1757-1825) and had four children born in
Virginia. They later had a child born in North Carolina in 1783. Sarah died in
Wilkes Co. NC in 1825. |

Son "Wm Holloday" appears in the 1790 Edgefield SC Census (begun Aug 1790), as
the 12th household in the first column on
page 511,
as a 9-member household living in the Edgefield section (Ninety-Six District).
His son Caleb Holloway was listed 19th with 10 members and brother "Reubin Holleway"
was listed first. Also several John Holloways also appear on the same page in
the same District [FamilySearch.org, website, microfilm image #325, source p. 511]. |

Son Asa married Sarah I. Jones who was born in 1804. He died in 1826 according to
a Bible record. |
